Dyeing processes account for a staggering 65% of water consumption in textile and apparel production. The global dye market is projected to reach $61.544 billion by 2025, with China accounting for over 60% of this market.
Water Consumption Challenges and Urgency of Green Transformation
Within the textile and apparel production chain, the water consumption of dyeing processes is staggering. Producing one ton of cotton fabric requires approximately 150 tons of water, with dyeing alone accounting for 98 tons.
The intrinsic value of water resources is severely undervalued, leading to frequent rework rates in the textile and apparel industry and further exacerbating water pollution.

In July 2025, the China Printing and Dyeing Industry Association, in collaboration with regional associations and dyeing enterprises, jointly released the “Comprehensive Green and Low-Carbon Development Initiative for the Printing and Dyeing Industry,” calling on all industry stakeholders to collectively shoulder environmental protection responsibilities.
Waterless Dyeing and Eco-Friendly Dye Development
Facing dual pressures of resource depletion and environmental pollution, leading dye manufacturers are overcoming industry bottlenecks through technological breakthroughs.
They have developed “waterless dyeing” technology, which eliminates the need for water as a medium. Instead, yarn and fabric are dyed using solvent combinations, achieving a solvent recovery rate of 99.8%.
Compared to traditional water-based dyeing, this technology saves 100% of salt and 95% of water, while increasing reactive dye utilization from approximately 60% to 97%.
By cationizing cotton, it achieves salt-free, alkali-free, and wastewater-free dyeing.
It also ventures into pigment digital printing, supplying pigment inks, pretreatments, post-treatments, and various chemicals to offer the industry ultra-eco-friendly “dye-free” and “waterless” dyeing solutions.
Natural dye development has emerged as a new industry trend. The Philippine Department of Science and Technology collaborates with the Alangan indigenous community to harness traditional knowledge in developing natural dyes, particularly indigo, for producing eco-friendly wood coatings.
From Linear to Circular
